Payday 3: Goes to New York
During their 10th anniversary stream, Overkill, the developers behind Payday 3, unveiled a fresh glimpse of the game. This sneak peek highlighted concept art while discussing the vision and foundation for the eagerly awaited co-op heist shooter.
Set in New York, Starbreeze envisions a vast and vibrant cityscape. Erik Wonnevi, the game director for Payday 3, emphasized the desire to create pre-heist environments that mirror everyday life, only to dramatically transform as the pandemonium of the heists unfolds. Illustrating this vision, Wonnevi presented a juxtaposition of concept arts—one serene scene prior to the heist and the other amidst the action.
Fans will rejoice to know that the beloved original Payday quartet—Dallas, Hoxton, Chains, and Wolf—are making a return. Tempted out of retirement by familiar faces, they re-enter a world of crime now shaped by contemporary challenges. The media has become adept at highlighting their ventures, often sensationalizing them.
Modern-day concerns like heightened surveillance, the murky realm of the dark web, and the proliferation of cutting-edge technology also find their way into the narrative. Wonnevi also hinted at tech magnates and cryptocurrency playing pivotal roles in the game’s storyline.
The journey of Payday 3’s development hasn’t been without its challenges. The game faced uncertainties due to Starbreeze’s financial hiccups in 2019. Fortunately, by February of the current year, those issues were resolved, and the game’s development regained momentum. Recent updates in March revealed that with a new publishing partner onboard, a 2023 release is in the cards.
